About Comment-Niger
Comment-Niger is a non-profit general incorporated association founded in March 2009. We conduct activities and projects to provide support for the children of Niger.
Greetings
"Comment-Niger" is a French expression, meaning "What is Niger?” I have lived in Niger for a total of seven years. I was the first Japanese woman to live in a camp in Afasto, further south of Arlit in the middle of the Saharan desert, for two years from 1978 to 1980 to accompany my husband who was stationed there. The second time round, we lived in the capital Niamey from 1986 to 1991with the children.
Up until 2011, approximately 1 hour of electricity production out of every 24 in Japan was generated from uranium produced in Niger, and that had been the case for over 30 years. However, as of January 2015, there is not a single electric power plant for civilian use in Niger. And, the majority of us Japanese do not even recognize the country of Niger. We think that it is our responsibility to at least recognize the existence of the country. To think and to learn about a country in a faraway desert can teach us about our own country surrounded by the ocean.
Comment-Niger’s mission is to provide support for the children of Niger, and to gain recognition of the Republic of Niger. Trends of Japanese energy security are swaying since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and its future is unpredictable. We wish to at least value and give thanks for the relationship between Niger and Japan, and to give thoughts to the country that has been supporting our convenient lives for over 30 years. Give some thoughts. Your attention matters. We would be grateful if you would care, even a little bit, about Niger.
